Sourdough Starter

Lets start by saying that Alex loves Sourdough.  It's his favorite type of bread and he eats it with everything including peanut butter and jelly.

Since moving to the east coast it has been a trial finding sourdough bread.  It's not impossible, but it usually runs out quickly and isn't there everyday or even at every grocery store.

In order to ensure that we have sourdough for all of Alex's bread needs it has become a necessity to make a sourdough starter.

The other day I came across this sourdough starter tutorial from the Cake Duchess and thought I can do that. So, here it goes...

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
Directions:
  • In a large glass bowl (I found this giant measuring cup at my local grocery store, cool right?) pour in warm water.
  • Sprinkle on yeast
  • Whisk yeast and sugar into the water, let sit for a few minutes.
  • Whisk in the flour, a little at a time, until combined.
  • Whisk it well to incorporate more air.
  • Cover bowl with a clean towel and set aside in a warm corner, where it wont be disturbed for 3 days
  • After 24 hours whisk until combined again.
  • Whisk again the next day.
  • At the end of the third day, whisk to combine.
  • Remove half the starter.
  • Add 1 cup of flour and 1 cup cold water.
  • Whisk together and put into a plastic container with a lid and place in the refrigerator.
  • Remember to "feed" your starter once a week.

  • Whisk or beat starter.
  • Remove half starter (to make bread or pancakes or pizza dough or your hearts content!)
  • Replace the volume of what you removed with more flour and water.

  1. Wow that sounds like such a tedious process! Yet so necessary to get some awesome bread from it! =D
