Kitchen Equipment

For this project I've been looking at the kitchen implements that Julia recommends one have in their kitchen in order to produce the correct product.

1. Stoves and Ovens.

- Though I find this obvious, one cannot cook with out one of these. Julia and her cohorts recommend you have one of each types. A gas stove and oven and an electric stove and oven. Since I am neither rich nor own my own home I will have to do with the stove and oven provided for me. It's Gas by the way.

2. Pots, Pans, and Casseroles.
(These are not mine though I wish they were). In MtAoFC they recommend enameled iron or stainless-steel lined heavy aluminum.
Hide non-stick pots and pans "from kooks and non-cooks".

3. Oval Casserole.

Since I do not posses one of these I will need to procure one soon. The book says to have a couple of sizes. A 2-quart size about 6 by 8 inches across and 3 1/2 inches high. The second one being a 7 to 8-quart size about 9 by 12 inches across and 6 inches high.

4. Baking dishes.

I have a few of these in the pyrex type. Though I am not opposed to getting more in this nice stylish red color.

5. Sauce Pans.

I have lots of these thanks to my mother-in-laws savvy thrift store shopping skills. However, I do not have one with a metal handle that according to MtAoFC can be placed into the oven.

6. Chef's Skillet and Saute Pan

I have some sort of variation on both of these, but one again I would not say no to brand new ones. Now that I'm learning what each piece is called and what it is really used for I cringe to think of how I have been using these items in the past.

7. Knives

For some time now my husband and I have been lamenting the fact that our knives were purchased, probably, at grocery market. A discount grocer. They are poor knives at their best, but now that they a dull they are horrible knives. We have contemplated getting them sharpened, however we are not sure they are worth the effort. So one of our goals is to purchase a nice expensive knife set this year.

8. Wooden Spatulas and Rubber Scrapers

I have a couple of these but need more.

9. Wire Whips and Whisks

I have one small whisk and no whips. According to Julia I need to have several of different sizes.

10. Bulb Baster and Poultry Shears.

I do have a plastic bulb baster, however Julia says that these may collapse under extreme heat. So I will need a metal bulb baster and poultry shears. I don't think my little craft scissors that I currently keep in the kitchen will do the trick.

11. Drum Sieve and Pestle.

I do not have anything close to this combination in my kitchen so it is added to my list of needs, as opposed to wants. Though I have used the drum sieves before, but you would not believe me if I told you for what. And it would be all in poor taste.

12. A Vegetable Mill (or food Mill) and Garlic Press.

I will have need of both of these.

13. A Food Processor.
Only a few days ago on Christmas, a pre-owned version of this exact food processor came into my possession. I was so very excited.

14. Mortar and Pestle.
Julia says that one should have a small one and a large one. I happen to have a small one that I inherited when my grandmother passed away in 2001. It has just been sitting on my window seal since 2008 when we moved into this house. Now I will finally be able to use it. I will also need a large one for large things, but I think I can wait on that for at least a little while. There are other implements that are more important.

15. Heavy-Duty Electric Mixer

The end all for home mixer is this Kitchen-aid mixer. I have wanted one for so very long and now I'm going to save up and finally get my self one. It is so very pretty and nice. No more mixing and mixing until my arm feels like it is going to fall off.
